Using outside sources in academic writing is very important because you can get different ideas and perspectives. Mike Bunn in his "How to read like a writer," uses a lot of quotes which gives him a lot more credibility and the reader now has a different perspective on the topic. A quote should always back up your claim and reasons as to why it does and it should also have where you got the information from. Now you have more support of what you are saying.
I agree that outside quotes give writers better credibility in their essays. You have a great point about readers having a different perspective on the topic, because using those outside sources gives essays a lot of support instead of just using what you know.
